2. Schools Adjudicator rules in favour of retaining middle school.
In what may turn to be an important decision, the Schools Adjudicator has thrown out the plans by Kirklees to close R M Grylls Middle school. The full report makes very interesting reading and will repay close study. Clearly the extended school service provided by the school, and the very clearly expressed support for the school from the community, have persuaded the adjudicator that the school should be retained. The adjudicator also identifies issues with the proposed LEA plan and proposed funding.

3. Middle schools show well in the KS3 performance tables
This year the middle schools that entered pupils for KS3 at the end of Year 8 were included in a separate table in the national KS3 performance tables for the first time. They compare very favourably with the average performance of pupils nationally a year later at the end of Year 9. A report on these results is available on the NMSF website:
http://www.middleschools.org.uk/research.php
Schools in a number of areas are exploring the introduction of the two year KS3. Our conference in Bedfordshire will perhaps provide an opportunity to share experiences.
